Black (from burnt rice)

Subject

Colours

Description

Raw uncooked white rice is roasted on a flat bottomed iron kadai over a controlled flame until burnt. Once black, this is ground to a paste on a shil nora (traditional grinding stones). The paste is then mixed with natural glue made from wood-apples (bel-er atha). The colour thus produced is placed on hollowed out coconut shells.
